Beijing Plans To Construct Underground Reservoirs

08 May 2008 by GreenChinaTech.com Editor | Print Print | Email Email

According to a representative from Beijing Geology and Mineral Prospecting and Developing Bureau, BGMPDB is filing an application with the Beijing Municipal Government on the construction of underground reservoirs to store water.

BGMPDB says in its report that after the water is deployed from the south to the north, underground storage should be used to store the water so as to meet emergency needs and increase the city's water supply capacity.

BGMPDB says that underground water is still the major water resource for Beijing and accounts for 65% of the city's total water use. However, due to constant exploration, Beijing's underground water level has been on the decline and underground funnels are on the rise in recent years.

BGMPDB plans to build five underground reservoirs to store a total of 4.7 billion stere of water, which is the largest in the country. BGMPDB says besides strategic storage and emergency use, the construction of these underground reservoirs will help lessen the city's current water shortage.
