Green Automobiles For Beijing Olympics

18 July 2008 by GreenChinaTech.com Editor | Print Print | Email Email

About 500 environmental automobiles have been delivered to the Transport Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, and will be used during the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics.

The 50 lithium-ion battery-powered electric buses developed by Beijing Institute of Technology and Beijing Jinghua Coach will run on the inner rings of the Olympic Village; 25 hybrid buses developed by Dongfeng Automobile and FAW will run on Olympic bus lanes; 75 hybrid cars developed by Chery, Changan and FAW will be part of the taxi team; 20 fuel cell cars developed by Shanghai Fuel Cell Powertrain, Tongji University and Shanghai Volkswagen will be official cars during the games; three fuel cell buses developed by Tsinghua University and Beiqi Foton Motor will run on bus lines for one year. In addition, another 320 pure electric circuit automobiles will go between Olympic venues in Beijing.

These energy-conservation and new energy automobiles will offer green transport services of most advanced technologies, and are expected to help achieve "zero emission" in the central Olympic area.

BOCOG estimates that the new autos will reduce gasoline and diesel oil by 780 tons, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2510 tons. They will also help emission reduction of carbon monoxide by seven tons, hydrocarbons 1.26 ton, nitrogen oxides 8.2 tons and particulates by a whopping 176 kilograms.
