Shanghai Lands World's Largest Carbon Capture Project

06 August 2009 by GreenChinaTech.com Editor | Print Print | Email Email

Huaneng Shidongkou No. 2 Power Plant Carbon Capture project, which is reported by Chinese media to be the largest of its kind in the world, will come to Shanghai.

Involving a total investment of CNY150 million, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2009 with an annual capture of 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide. However, the project will only be for carbon capture, but not storage.

Xu Shisen, a principal of the project, stated that the project would operate in the same way as the one in Beijing: capture carbon dioxide after burning and then putting it into industrial use.

The project is said to be Huaneng's second carbon capture project. The company's first carbon capture project is located in the Gaobeidian district of Beijing. Completed before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the Gaobeidian project features an annual capture of 3,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

Though carbon capture and storage technology is still in the experimental stage, investors around the world are bullish in light of the talks on climate change to be held in Copenhagen at the end of this year and they have begun to focus on this industry.
