The world's largest hydropower station, the Three Gorges Power Plant in China, has been chosen by Scientific American as one of the worlds' top ten renewable energy projects.

Lu Youmei, the former general manager of China Three Gorges Project Corporation, told local media at a recent seminar that the Three Gorges Power Plant does not consume any water, nor emit any carbon dioxide, polluted water, or solid waste. Lu said that the annual generation capacity of the Plant is equivalent to reducing 100 million tons to 120 million tons of carbon dioxide each year and it can also help reduce the emission of such harmful gases as sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide. The water conservancy and hydropower expert stated that the Three Gorges Project is an important energy project and energy and power base for China.

Lu added that the Three Gorges Project also plays a significant role in reducing flood and preventing disaster in the Yangtze River region and is a project on a grand scale that can help improve the environment.

Lu said that the completion of the Three Gorges Project is a great contribution to the sustainable development of China and it is a big gift to the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
